AN ACT

entitled

National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (Amendment) Act 2019,

Being an Act to amend the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (Amendment) Act 1993 to confer additional powers and functions to the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology to regulate and control the use of nuclear and ionising radiation with the aim of protecting individuals, society and the environment,

MADE by the National Parliament to come into operation in accordance with a notice in the National Gazette, by the Head of State, acting with, and in accordance with, the advice of the Minister.

1. OBJECTIVE OF THE INSTITUTE (AMENDMENT OF SECTION 4).

Section 4 of the Principal Act is amended by adding a new paragraph after Paragraph (f) as follows:

“(g) to secure the protection of persons and the environment from exposure to nuclear energy and ionising radiation to the maximum extent that is reasonably practicable and recognising the need for the use of radiation for beneficial purposes.”.

2. FUNCTIONS OF THE INSTITUTE (AMENDMENT OF SECTION 5).

Section 5 of the Principal Act is amended in Subsection (1) by repealing Paragraph (aq) and replacing it with the following new paragraphs:

“(aq) to do all such matters and things as may be incidental to or consequential upon the exercise of its powers or the discharge of its duties under this Act or any other Act conferring additional powers and functions; and

(ar) to control and regulate the use of nuclear energy and ionising radiation under the Radiation Safety and Control Act 2019.”.
