IMPORT OF MOTOR VEHICLES (CONTROL)
To control and prohibit the importation of right-hand drive motor vehicles.
1. Interpretation
In this Act –
"motor vehicle" shall have the same meaning as in the Road Traffic (Control) Act [Cap. 29];
"relevant date" means any date specified by the Minister by Order published in the Gazette and shall be a date after the date of expiry of a period of two months from the date of the coming into force of this Act.*
2. Prohibition of importation of right-hand drive motor vehicles
With effect from the relevant date, no person shall import or cause or permit to be imported into Vanuatu any motor vehicle which is constructed so as to be steered from the right side of that vehicle.
2A. Exemption
The Minister may, in the public interest, exempt any motor vehicle from the requirements of section 2 of this Act.
3. Penalty
Any person who contravenes section 2 of this Act shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding VT 200,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years, or to both such fine and imprisonment.
