TAXIS (RESTRICTION ON THE ISSUING
OF NEW PUBLIC VEHICLE LICENCES)
Order 24 of 1998
An Order to restrict the issuing of new public vehicle licences by the Port Vila Municipality.
1. Pending applications for public vehicle licences
All applications for public vehicle licences received by the Port Vila Municipality prior to the commencement date of this Order shall
be processed in the usual manner and in accordance with the law.
2. Maintaining present status
(1) The Port Vila Municipality shall after issuing the pending licences, use its best endeavours to maintain the number of public
vehicles (buses and taxis) at its present status.
(2) The present status is 240 buses and 240 taxis.
3. Restriction on the issuing of new public vehicle licences
(1) The Port Vila Municipality shall only issue further new public vehicle licences where existing buses or taxis no longer operate
as such, or have been totally damaged and no longer intend to operate as public vehicles, and the Municipality intends to maintain
the same number of buses and taxis as in section 2 above.
(2) Except as permitted in section 2(1) and subsection (1) of this section, the Port Vila Municipality shall not issue any further new public vehicle licences.
(3) This Order shall remain in force unless revoked, amended or superseded by another Order.
4. Penalties
Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with this Order shall be guilty of an offence publishable by a fine not exceeding VT
20,000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 1 year or to both such fine and imprisonment.
